The Violent Waters of HPC

by Mike Bernhardt

The Shipwreck
By: Joseph Mallord William Turner, 1805

An editorial opinion piece by Mike Bernhardt

Supercomputers should be considered an important strategic asset, and funded as such. If the USA really wants to demonstrate world technological leadership, then adequate resources need to be committed. The failure of Blue Waters should be seen not just as a failure for IBM, but as a failure for the leadership of this country.

Raj Hazra, GM, Intel HPC

In the previous issue of The Exascale Report, Intel took quite a bit of heat from the community as many people reacted to Intel’s announcement of exascale leadership presented at ISC’11. In this issue, Raj Hazra, General Manager of Intel’s HPC group steps up to take responsibility, clarify Intel’s messaging, and commits to getting Intel reconnected with the HPC community.

Interconnects and Exascale: An Interview with Intel Fellow, Shekhar Borkar.

by Mike Bernhardt
Raj Hazra, GM, Intel HPC I was intrigued when I saw the title of this presentation at the Hot Interconnects conference. "Will interconnect help or limit the future of computing?" So we tracked down the author, Shekhar Borkar, Intel Fellow and director of Extreme-scale Technologies at Intel Labs for this brief interview on Interconnects and Exascale.

Interconnects and Exascale: An Interview with Cray Vice President, Barry Bolding

by Mike Bernhardt
Barry Bolding Interconnect discussions are nothing new to Cray. So, to talk about interconnects and exascale, we tracked down Barry Bolding, vice president of Cray’s products division, who knows a lot about balancing wish lists and engineering deliverables.

John Barr

In this special report, John Barr, The 451 Group, breaks down several aspects of the Intel and SGI collaboration announcement of building an exascale system by 2018.

Will Infiniband Play A Role in Exascale?

by Staff
Infiniband is one of those topics that provokes some very interesting discussions. Will Infiniband play a role in exascale? It's a point of disagreement for many. We asked Gilad Shainer of Mellanox to comment on this.

Can HPC or Exascale Applications Be Green? They can - if they come from Ireland.

by Staff
Exascale is not just about hardware and software stacks. Applications must be written to take advantage of these monster systems. And these new applications may come from places we don’t often think about. A feature interview with Ivan Girotto of the Irish Centre for High-End Computing.

The Exascale Report encourages members of the HPC community to contribute articles dealing with key issues and technologies associated with the drive to develop exascale systems. Please submit a brief (150-250 word abstract) to idea@theexascalereport.com describing your proposed topic. We welcome original submissions from HPC practitioners. Articles will be peer reviewed.

Please note that success stories, white papers, press releases and other marketing communications collateral or public relations materials are not what we are looking for.
